Different kinds of meditations are practiced throughout the world in different eras. Meditations at present time are quite different from past times. But the basic objective is same for all kinds of meditations that is, to relax the mind & the body and unleash the power of mind.

Almost all meditations can be broadly classified into the following two categories:

  1. Concentrative meditation: In concentrative type of meditations the meditator concentrates on a particular thing like breath or object or image or imaginary objects or imaginary environments. During this type of meditations mind and body is relaxed by focusing one thing at a time.

As for example: In some concentrative meditations mind is relaxed by focusing on the breathing. At first she sits or lie down to have a comfortable position. Then meditator takes long & deep breaths. After taking breaths for sometimes she focuses on the inhalation and exhalation. In this way mind and body gets relaxed. Then meditator may focus on something else like imagining herself in a place of sanctuary and peace where her mind and body gets more relaxed.

  2. Non concentrative or Mindfulness meditation: In nonconcentrative type of meditations the meditator does not focuses on anything. In other words she doesn't control any of her thoughts and feelings. Instead she just let her thoughts and feelings come and pass through her mind without trying to control or interfere them.

During this type of meditation the meditator tries to stay only in the present by making her mind full of the thoughts which are coming at the moments of meditation. Not reacting to these thoughts gives a clear and non-reactive state of mind. Thus the required relaxation is achieved
